Do You Really Need to Have “Goals” to Succeed?
By Mike Krsticevic | April 26, 2008
The above headline is a valid question and follows on from my last post on 23 March 2008 titled ‘What is “YG + TW + MA = TH + RP”?‘ (the Rapid Progress Formula).
I mean, can’t you just waffle through life and still be a “success”, no matter how you define what “success” means to you?
For example, if waking up every day above ground (rather than being “six-feet-under”) is “success” to you than maybe clearly defined goals are not necessary for you. Having said that, however, isn’t the above definition of success a goal in itself?
I think it’s fair to say that most of us have dreams we wish to fullfil in our time here on earth. Whether that be to:
- own a better house, car, boat, plane
- to spend more time with our family and friends
- to create and/or contribute to a charitable foundation
- to paint, play a musical instrument, sing like a professional, fly planes
- to travel to amazing places on this earth (and even off it, ie, space, moon, mars?)
- to sculpt our perfect body with excellent cardio fitness and great all round health
- to make more money than we do now
- and much more
However, unless you know WHAT you want, how will you ever GET what you want?
Also, if you’re not 100% clear on WHAT you want, you’re much more likely to accept WHATEVER comes your way that LOOKS vaguely like what you THINK you want. This usually comes in the form of someone else telling you what they think is good for you and you living their lives.
So let me make a bold statement right here … “I BELIEVE YOU CAN NOT ACHIEVE ANYTHING WORTHWHILE WITHOUT HAVING A GOAL!!”
Note: I did NOT say you need a PLAN (ie, “the how”). That is on the OTHER side of the equal (=) sign in the Rapid Progress Formula, and for good reason. You merely need a goal.
Expanding the above even further, I will also go so far as to say that, if you want to achieve your goals faster than you ever thought possible, you also need do the following:
- make sure your goals are CLEARLY DEFINED, WRITTEN DOWN GOALS!!; and
- VISUALISE and FEEL what it feels like to be in that place when you have already achieved your goals.
I’ll expand on the above in my next post.
Let me have your thoughts.
