Visualise Your Goal and Feel What It Feels Like to ALREADY Achieve It!

By Mike Krsticevic | January 5, 2009

The second bullet point I made in an earlier post on Goal Setting stated the following:

“VISUALISE and FEEL what it feels like to be in that place when you have already achieved your goals”.

Now, this is the THE KEY to goal setting that most people don’t apply … and it’s the most crucial!

We all know of people who make “New Year’s Resolutions” only to forget about those ‘goals’ the very next day. One of the reasons they never achieve them is because they fail to write them down … AND review them regularly.

However, the other main ingredient that people forget to apply (or have never heard of before at all) is the need to both ‘visualise’ and ‘FEEL’ what it feels like to achieve your goals.

How do you FEEL something you haven’t yet achieved?

That’s a fair question. At first it seems difficult … and it may in fact be a little tricky until you get used to it … but with practice you’ll do it automatically and your results will be amazing! I personally noticed a dramatic increase in speed in achieving my goals when I added this element to my goal setting program.

Basically, all you need to do is apply as many of your senses as you can to the vision of achieving your ‘clearly defined’ goals. Note, this will only work for ‘clearly defined’ goals and not a ‘rough description’ or ‘general idea’. It’s significantly more difficult, if not impossible, to accurately visualise and feel your success when you don’t have a clear definition for success. So for now, let’s assume you’ve mastered the ‘clearly defined’ goals part.

Steps to “Feeling” your goal being achieved

This may sound strange initially but, for example, if your goal was to travel on a holiday to Hawaii and in Hawaii you will be sitting at a bar at an exclusive hotel resort, in your “mind’s eye” taste the ‘pinocolada’ (or some other drink that you love). Taste the blend of flavours bouncing around your taste buds. Then take another sip and and let the juices hover around in your mouth before you finally let them wash down your throat with a ’sigh of joy’ (this is the use of sound).

Now you must thinking, “C’mon Mike, now you’re really going too far! How can I possibly touch something that I haven’t yet achieved?”Of course, I’m sure with a little lateral thinking you will find a way. I mean, if you wanted a new Mercedes Benz S500, all you need to do is dress up in your favourite suit, go down to your nearest dealership and sit in their demonstration model of that very same car!

If you want to be a pilot in a Boeing 777-300ER, find the nearest place they have a simulator and ask if you can go for a ride.  Sure, this may be a big ask … but how badly do you want your goal? (this topic will be covered in a future post when we discuss “THE WHY?” of your goals).

If you can’t find a simulator, or they won’t let you in one, find another aircraft type, or go to a museum and find a similar version, or search YouTube.com and find example videos from a pilot’s chair and then put a ‘pretend’ steering column in front of you and fly along with them! Sure it sounds a little crazy but the benefits are enormous! Do you think it might be at least worth a try? I’d respectively suggest that it most definitely would.

If you’ve read this far then you’re probably thinking to yourself, “I can see where you’re going with this one, Mike”.If you were thinking that you should smell the leather trim of your new car or the sea spray while walking along the beach of your holiday location, you are right!

If your goal is to get excellent grades on your upcoming major exams, what should you smell then? Well, how about smelling the reward you will give yourself when you achieve or exceed your target minimum grades? Your are merely limited by your imagination so feel free to explore the possibilities. When you engage all of your senses, including smell (one that is often overlooked) you accelerate the speed with which you will achieve your goals.

Now that you’ve engaged all of your senses, watch how quickly you start achieving your goals. The more vivid and real your goals are in your “mind’s eye” the faster you will achieve them.

Go ahead and practice it today!
