Facing the Giants - and Never, Ever Quitting!

By Mike Krsticevic | February 22, 2008

In my last post I included an extract from the movie “Facing the Giants”. For those who missed it, here it is again (only 6 mins long and worth a view) ….

So what did you learn from that clip?

At first glance it’s easy to think there was only one message that flowed from that portion of the movie. But when you analyse it more closely, there is a lot more worth noting.

For example:

  1. Always Give Your Best! This is an obvious point BUT worthy of repetition. Sometimes we all get “caught up” in our day to day lives (which usually consists of a lot of ‘moaning and groaning’ over irrelevant issues) and, therefore, we lose focus on our goals. Once we lose focus we stop driving forward … we stop giving our best! What are you goals? We all know we should have them written down … do you? How do you know what to ‘give your best’ towards if you don’t know what you want to be great at?

  2. Never Ever Quit - This may seem to be the same message as “Always Give Your Best” but I think they are slightly different and understanding the difference is very important. ‘Giving your best’ means that you don’t stop short of what you are capable of, no matter what that goal is. However, you can still give your best but spread your ‘best’ among too many things that you end up losing focus and not achieving the desired outcome. Everyone says, “I did my best” when deep down they may not really mean it.  But when you hear someone say “I will never ever quit!” then you know that person is super focused on one goal. Have you committed to yourself to NEVER EVER QUIT on your most important goal?

  3. A Coach Will Push You Further - If you look at all the successful people around you - whether they be in sport, business or otherwise - in almost all cases those people have a coach or mentor who encourages, inspires, motivates, ’slaps them around from time to time’, ‘kicks them in the pants’, laughs with them, guides them to be much more than they themselves thought they could be and holds them accountable. Do you have a ‘coach’ or ‘mentor’? Is that coach someone who has achieved what you want to achieve or who has at least helped someone else achieve what you want to achieve?

  4. By Giving Your Best And Never Quitting, You Inspire Others - When you go above and beyond even what you thought you were capable of, not only will you rocket towards achieving your dreams but you will ‘give permission’ and inspire others to be more than even they thought they could be. You’ve probably heard the story of the “4-minute mile” barrier that everyone thought was impossible to break. After many many years of attempting to break this seemingly impossible barrier, as soon as Roger Bannister broke it 1954, that same year numerous other runners ran sub-four minute miles. What do you currently think is ‘impossible’? What do you currently sub-consciously think is out of your reach or realms of possibility?

  5. By Giving Your Best and Never Quitting, You Become A Leader - Doing that which others aren’t willing to do to achieve their goals makes you unique. It puts you above the ‘average crowd’. When you stand taller because you’re willing to go further, you become an inspiration to others AND you are given inherent authority to ‘lead’ others. Of course, it goes without saying, such ‘authority’ must be treated with respect. Do you want to be a leader?

What else did you pick up from the above movie extract? I look forward to your comments.
